When I Was A Freshie In UP

This is currently trending on Twitter but I do not wish to flood people’s accounts. AGAIN. I owe a lot to this school in terms of knowledge and memories. So here’s a list of things that I cherish from the first year (2005) of my awesome college life:

When I was a freshie…

-bagong labas pa lang ang C2 Iced Tea

-the Ikot/Toki was only 5pesos

-may class card pa.

-tuition was only 300/unit. The most I ever paid for a semester was 6,086.50.

-the parking lots were almost empty since most of the students weren’t that rich

-there was a vendor right in the middle of AS parking lot. Actually, they still didn’t have designated areas and you had to run for dear life when it rained.

-we had the First Day Funk care of Rexona.

-jologs pa kaming lahat dahil ‘di pa uso ang skinny jeans at wayfarers.

-if you had a laptop, you were cool.

-ang “prerog” ay prerog. As in, magmamakaawa ka sa prof/dept para lang makapasok.

-and by laptops, I mean those things that required their own big-ass bags and were wider than your body. Carrying one around meant needing a regular check up of the spine.

-mayaman ako sa yellowpad at index card.

-online stalking was limited to Friendster and Multiply. But then again, the profile owner would know you were stalking them.

-wearing Havaianas was a big deal.

-there was no hassle when it came to IDs. The No ID-No Entry/Exit policy didn’t exist in the buildings (Except for Eng’g & the libraries) and the gates.

-enrollment was done in the AS lobby.

-enrollment sucked.

-we had to write on our Form 5As.

-The Registrar was holed up in a warehouse beyond anyone’s understanding of the university’s geography.

-our only Malling choice was SM North (without the Annexes or The Block).

-isa lang ang Rodic’s

-we had yahoo groups to coordinate with each other in group projects/tasks.

-Snake rallies/forums about GMA and election fraud were the hip things to do.

-uso pa ang mang-away sa Peyups.com

-students still spoke straight tagalog/english/salitang bading in the hallways. None of those damn remixes of aforementioned languages.

-Monay with cheese/peanut butter cost 10 pesos.

-hilaw na mangga was only 10 pesos.

-the acad oval still didn’t have the one-way scheme.

-I stalked Atom Araullo and Marvin Cruz

-speaking of Marvin Cruz, that was the year that we beat DLSU twice in the UAAP basketball. We had a 6-0 winning streak in the first half then Ateneo beat us.

-people look at you weird if you ask if a restaurant has wifi. Back then, they thought I was looking for drugs.

-mahilig ako magsuot ng UP shirt pag bumibisita sa ibang school

-my only valid ID was my UP ID, even if no one is asking me for an ID

-I was addicted to Multiply.com.

-only REAL photographers carried DSLRs, I don’t think people knew what those were back then.

-you had to deal with mud when transferring buildings. Even if you had a car, the parking lots weren’t paved.

-I had classmates that actually didn’t have cellphones!!! *CueTwilight Zone music*

-basta “free concert” pinupuntahan ko

-the “cool people” hung out in coffeeshops, not teashops

-I wore pajamas to school. I had a 7am class and that was it. I woke up, went to school then went home to go back to sleep.

-hindi pa ako nagkaka-boyfriend

-I actually hoped to get honors. My laziness made sure I wouldn’t go far.

-I had my picture taken with Oble *OOPS!!!!

-I memorized the alma mater song, just for fun

-I was proud of my camera phone.

-and of course, I knew that I would leave UP one day but I never thought that even 5 years is not enough.
